Suspect in custody after teen shot in the head at Smithfield Walmart

— A suspect was in custody after a shooting at a Walmart in Smithfield on Friday evening.

The Smithfield Police Department said Saturday that 19-year-old Matthew Jason Beddingfield turned himself into authorities on Saturday morning.

Beddingfield was charged with attempted first-degree murder and was held in the Johnston County jail on a $1 million bond.

A 17-year-old was shot in the head around 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Walmart, located at 1299 N. Brightleaf Blvd.

Police said the victim was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Witnesses said chaos broke out after the gunfire.

“I was coming out the door, and we hear bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam — I don’t know, 12, 15 times,” said Bobby Barbour. “Everybody was ducking, running to the door, trying to get in.”

Authorities said they were still working to determine a motive.
